A formal chess program was started at Roeper’s Lower School by parent Diallo Smith six years ago with six children. It has grown to 45 students, which is nearly 20% of the K – 5 student body! There are now 10 students playing on the Middle School team with three coaches: Bryan Wilson and faculty members Ellen Hoppe and Patrick Ratliff.

Ellen commented, “They are dedicated players; they work together and mentor each other. They are a cohesive team; they back each other up and support each other at tournaments, demonstrate leadership and sportsmanship.  Beginning at a young age, they learn to comfortably advocate for themselves, take on challenges, problem solve, and develop individual style.”

Roeper Soccer Team Scores High on GPA!
2/25/2015

Winning a State Championship in soccer was a first for our school in its 75 year history.  The young men on the team recently proved that they spent as much time hitting the books as they did honing their soccer skills.  The Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association awards seniors with a GPA of 3.5 or higher academic all state status.  All ten of Roeper’s seniors will be receiving this award but even more impressive is the team GPA.

The MHSSCA awards academic all state certificates to those teams reaching a team GPA of 3.3 or higher.  This year Roeper's championship team posted a 3.91 team GPA for its twenty member squad.  That score is the highest in the sport on record in the state of Michigan.  Congratulations to the boys for representing our school so well on the field and in the classroom.

Observer/Eccentric Article About Roeper Soccer Title
11/10/2014

Roeper Nation Basks in Historic State Championship written by Marty Budner  (The Michael Williams he writes about is really Michael Matthews!)

Three days after winning the boys soccer state championship, Birmingham Roeper head coach Ed Sack was still fielding congratulatory correspondence from across the country.
Whether email notes from Washington, D.C., Texas or California, text messages from near and far or merely word of mouth around the school, Sack is accepting it all with an ear-to-ear smile and a proud sense of accomplishment.
It certainly is a euphoric state around the hallowed halls of Roeper High School these days.

1st Place People's Choice Award goes to...
10/30/2014

The 1st Place People's Choice Award at the Lawrence Technical University's Halloween Robot Parade goes to...  Lilly Richards and Maya McEntyre!  CONGRATULATIONS!

Lilly Richards and Maya McEntyre

Our robot, The Garden of Hideous Delights, follows a black line on a white tabletop by reading the different light values with its light sensor. Using its ultrasonic sensor, it also stops when there is another robot in front of it, and then resumes running when there is room. On the green, grassy, surface of the trailer sits a monster box whose eyes flash green while rapidly gnashing its teeth. On either side of this lie numerous pumpkins. Behind the box a ghastly zombie head is on top of a barren, black tree. Two ghosts are opposite it, swaying with the movement of the robot. Surrounding the whole trailer is a brown picket fence, and even the backboard has five spooky murals on it. This is our first robot, and this event was a great opportunity to learn lots about robots and programming, and at the same time be creative and get into the Halloween spirit! - Written and submitted by Lilly Richards

Nielsen as the recipient of the RoughReader Award.  This group was responsible for reading, reviewing and discussing nine currently popular books for kids during a ten week period.  During the final "committee meeting," each book was discussed thoroughly, considering pros and cons and how well it fit the award criteria that the students defined at the start of the course. After the discussions, the kids voted for their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice picks. Following the point-system used by the real Newbery committee, the votes were tallied and the clear winner was “The False Prince.” The kids also chose to name “Wonder” and “The One and Only Ivan” as Honor books.  The RoughReader Award was modeled after the Newbery Medal award.  Students chose the name based on the school’s mascot the Roughrider.
